How do I explain body boundaries?
In my book Boundaries, to celebrate the joy of childhood and protect the children, there’s a whole section devoted to body boundaries.
You can point out that the walls of your home are boundaries and they protect you from wind, rain, cold, sun and snow.
You can point out that the lanes in the street are boundaries so that cars stay where they belong and accidents don’t happen.
Ask your child if they can think of other boundaries – help him/her expand their thought processes using this exercise.
Then explain that people have boundaries also. Our body is a boundary and no one should hurt our body boundary. Talk about body parts and name them; don’t be embarrassed about this – we all have the same body parts, women and men have some areas that are different but our bodies are a boundary.
Having a conversation about not hitting, not kicking and not spitting would be a good way to open up this conversation.
Your child depends on you for his/her safety.
